This list is far from comprehensive, of course make sure to sound off below on any notable fan-made games not mentioned. Over the past month, I've gone down the ROM hack rabbit hole, playing over a dozen fan-made titles in order to curate a list of some of the most fascinating Pokémon games I've ever played - official or otherwise. Some don't even attempt authenticity, favoring puerile humor, violence or frequent nudity instead. Some are exceptional recreations of a true, full Pokémon experience. Some are loaded onto actual Game Boy Advance cartridges, and bootlegged to unwitting consumers. Dozens, if not hundreds, of these games can be found online for free.

Since the early 2000s, fans with the knowhow, software and artistic ability to do so have been creating unofficial Pokémon games in the form of ROM hacks. To even attempt high-level competitive play requires hundreds of hours of breeding, battling and pure, dumb luck.ĭespite the truly gargantuan amount of time demanded by the core series, there are fans who demand more - and fans who create more. To fully complete a PokeDex in Pokémon X and Y, you have to collect over 700 discrete monsters, either through catching, trading, evolving, transferring from previous installments or obtaining from timed Wi-Fi or real-world events. That tenacity is built into the franchise's very nature. The Pokémon-playing community has proven to be one of the most industrious groups of fans this industry has ever seen. Fixed bug where oak wouldn't take you to get your first pokemon.Not only have you not caught them all - you haven't even played them all. Trainers all now have the correct Pokemon. Pokemons house (R25) have been added, with the correct pokemon. All trainers on the cerulean city bridge (R24) to Mr. Added NPC on Route 1 that gives a Potion. NPCs and trainers added to Viridian Forest. Fixed crash where the second rival battle would crash if Bulbasaur was your starter. Fixed glitches that would occur after losing a rival battle. Updated many NPCs to their correct sprites and dialog. Cascade badge available after beating misty. Saffron City blocked until tea is given. However no progress was made to the stolen version and I've since done much more to game. Later, it got stolen and I was given no credit. I released a previous version which people accused me of stealing because I used the original developers screenshots. A couple years ago I found the project and decided to continue development. This project was started by Chaos Rush however he abandoned it around 2011. This is a ROM hack based off of Heart Gold which aims to remake the classic game Pokémon Fire Red.
I also want to look into the possibility of adding Sinnoh as a 3rd region. I will probably make a separate version once the ROM is complete which opens up the area (maybe with a story). When the hack progresses further I plan on using a map editor to make them look like the originals.

The archive below contains the patch and the patching program (xdelta). There will be a Soul Blue version released once this is close enough to completion and I also plan on making a Yellow version once Heart Red & Soul Blue have been finished.Ĭlassic GameBoy game in DS style graphics, with touchscreen This way the ROM can be used as a base for others to start their own hack. I will be trying to make this similar to the original, but with the DS's features. Dialogue is taken from the Gameboy Advance versions ( Fire Red & Leaf Green) however there are no plans to include the Sevii Islands like there are in those games. This is a ROM hack of Pokemon Heart Gold which aims to remake the classic game Pokémon Red.
